I know that my question was general...too general.

I am planning a RDB to host 700GB for thousands of PC's holding about 3GB each. Subsets for the data is to be published to the PC's based on profiles. The DB must also respond to queries from the public over the Internet, but that should be a low demand.

I hope that you can give me some insite based on this information.
