I would hate you to go on being frustrated so here is a clarification for you...

You are confusing two seperate jobs... you may as well ask how much experience a programmer needs before he can fly a jumbo jet!

NOW THEN... there are some people who *can* do both jobs... and there are some people who are *required* to do both jobs, but they are still seperate skills. Clearly though, someone who can do both things should be more valuable to an employer. Furthermore, personally I believe that a really good programmer should learn some DBA stuff along the way. Just my opinion dont_ya_know....

The Oracle books could give you some excellent there is one entitled "The DBA's Handbook" (I think) which explains the role of the DBA properly...
