I pose the question what makes an Oracle Programmer a DBA?

  • How many years of experience?
    • Overall?
    • Using Oracle? (if applicable)
    • Using a relational database?
  • What type of knowledge base should the person have?
    • Just out of college?
    • No college but years of practical experiences?
    • At least n years of working in Oracle or a relational database in a business setting?
  • How should a person learn to be a DBA?
    • Attend Oracle Classes? (Starting with the Intro to Oracle in some situations)
    • Read books? (Please List)
    • Ask questions of current DBA's?
    • Be trained to use Oracle from current programmers?

As a followup, at what point should an Oracle programmer consider themselves DBA material?

  • When they know about...?
