newline characters in VARCHAR2

Do newline characters get removed when text is put into a VARCHAR2 field? I need a way to store a long piece of text and then retrieve it and display it in a window the way it was typed in. I cannot seem to get the newline characters out of ORACLE.

Am I using the wrong data type. I looked at RAW, but there must be a better way.

I certainly would appreciate any suggestions.
