Any idea for field w/ greater than 255 bytes?

I am trying to have one column for a comment (string) in a table that is greater than 255. I tried to use LONG but it does not work. The book says a LONG can hold up to 2 gigabytes of info. Anyone have any ideas? The error I get says :

Field in data file exceeded maximum specified length

Is there another datatype that I might be able use that I'm not aware of?
