SQL*Net version 2 connections are slow.

I have a problem using SQL*Net version 2 to connect clients running MS WFWG 3.11 to a server running Solaris 2.4.

Everything works OK, but connection is VERY SLOW. There seems to be a 15 second pause during which nothing happens (and the PC is entirely locked up). Once connected, performance seems OK>

SQL*Net v2 connections from Unix boxes do not seem to suffer this delay, nor do SQL*Net v1 connectins from the PCs.

The software versions invloved are:

Client: SQL*Net version 2.1.4.1.4 with tCP/IP adaper version 2.1.4.1.3A.

Lan Workplace version 4.12. Windows 3.11.

Server: SQL*Net version 2.1.4.1.0, RDBMS version 7.1.4.1.0

         Solaris 2.4.

I would be very grateful for any hints as to the cause of this delay.
