Double Entry Accounting

We are in the process of developing a transaction based system which requires a debit and a credit for each purchase. I am looking for any public domain applications or developments that provide the tables and necessary support for this type of system.

We are not building a full scale accounting system. We need only balance every credit with a corresponding debit somewhere in the system.
