Reportwriter referencing using &SQL fields

We've created a field using &SQL, and we're having a problem referencing that field in the WHERE clause of one of our queries. We get the error

SRW-1606: Query <QUERY NAME> cannot reference Field <FIELD NAME> because the field is not reset at a group whose query is a parent of <QUERY NAME>. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
