WE RUN ORACLE CLIENT SOFTWARE just fine using TCP/IP (although the 32 bit stack is a little tricky to get working)...... can't answer on SPX except that I had a problem similar to yours on a sequent box and we HAD to install tcp/ip to get spx/ipx to work!
