DAYTON, Ohio, June 19, 1995 -- AT&T's computer unit announced a new world's record for Transaction Processing Performance Council benchmark B (TPC-B) using its Globalyst S40 PC server. These results set a new standard for price/performance in a Microsoft Windows NT/SQL Server environment.

The AT&T Globalyst S40 PC server, using two 133 MHz Intel Pentium processors moving data across dual PCI buses, achieved 440.98 transactions per second (tpsB) at a price/performance of $253.61/tpsB. This benchmark was accomplished using Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 in a Windows NT Server 3.51 operating system.

The Globalyst S40 server, scalable up to four processors, is positioned as the price/performance workhorse of AT&T's comprehensive line of Intel-based PC servers.

The TPC BenchmarkB, developed in 1992 by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), is considered to be a leading workload benchmark test for evaluating real-world application performance.

"These record TPC-B benchmark results further demonstrate AT&T's leadership in offering PC server solutions with the best price/performance," said Rob Howe, vice president, Worldwide PC Marketing, AT&T Global Information Solutions. "These benchmarks also reflect the combined strengths of Microsoft's client/server-oriented software and AT&T GIS' expertise in enterprise-wide server solutions."

Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 is a powerful multithreaded database server designed to enhance the capabilities of both SMP and uniprocessor architectures to deliver breakthrough database scalability, manageability and performance. Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 provides the most effective database technology available to help organizations manage increasingly larger, more complex databases while substantially improving overall system performance and scalability.

"These benchmark results highlight AT&T's excellent price/performance and ability to exploit the scalability that Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 and Windows NT Server offer," said Gary Voth, group product manager, Business Systems Division, Microsoft Corp. "Together, Microsoft's server software and AT&T' scalable PC server line provide customers with a strong foundation for mission-critical business solutions."

The TPC-B benchmark simulates the activities found in complex OLTP environments, such as disk I/O, fast transaction execution times, and transaction integrity, and defines a standard for calculating data throughput as measured by transactions per second (tpsB) and price/performance, which represents total system cost of usage over five years ($/tpsB).

AT&T' Global Information Solutions, manufacturer of the award- winning Globalyst PC family that ranges from laptops to PC servers, is leading the world to personal computing and communications (PC&). AT&T' Global Information Solutions helps its customers better understand and serve their customers by more effectively getting, moving and using information.
