Forms4.5: LAST_RECORD/Performance

I'm trying to add a "Goto Last Record" feature to a form containing a multi-record block. For large queries, using the LAST_RECORD function causes very long delays. Presumably, Forms is fetching all the records. Has anyone come up with a way to quickly fetch the last few records for a given query (dynamic -- sort order is user-selectable) into a block?

Is there a way to use the ROWID or ROWNUM to speed this process ?
