Damn. I hate proving myself wrong.

This bug, and a fix, is documented in the 7.1.3.2 bughist.doc file in the ORA_RDBMS directory.

Don't know if it will work for accessing V6 databases but you can try.

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
180903 RDBMS 7.1.2
DATABASE LINK FROM PRE-7.0.15 TO 7.1.X FAILS WITH EXCEPTION (CORE
       DUMP/AV)
       ------------------
The hidden parameter _SQL_CONNECT_CAPABILITY_CODE has been added in
release 7.1.2. This parameter allows a database link from a
pre-7.0.15 release to work with release 7.1, by making the
7.1.2 server emulate release 7.0 link characteristics. To use
this parameter, specify the following in your parameter file:

        _SQL_CONNECT_CAPABILITY_CODE 7

It is anticipated that support for this parameter will be
       dropped in a future release.

Gee, I wish the Oracle help line knew about this bug so they could have told me about the workaround WHEN I NEEDED IT!

I suppose what should really worry me is that all the bugs are recorded on their Oracle database system AND THEY CAN'T FIND THEM.
