I did Solaris 2.3 to 2.4 upgrade last week. Upgrade along with volume manager upgrade trashed /etc directory. Had to do brand new Solaris install. I understand this is typical for Solaris upgrades, they simply don't work. Make sure you apply all necessary patches recommended up to this point. Having no problems running server 7.1.6 on it.
