cannot find datafile?

after installing oracle 7.1 for nt on a workstation, i can start instancd connect internal, but the probme start when i try to mount database name oracle
paratmere file e:\orant\rdbms71\init.ora i get errors like
Errors in file E:\ORANT\RDBMS71\trace\orclDBWR.TRC:

ORA-01157: cannot identify data file 3 - file not found
ORA-01110: data file 3: 'rbsorcl.ora'
ORA-09202: sfifi: error identifying file
OSD-04002: unable to open file (OS 2)

these errors are common to all datafiles. i have not modified any files after installation, do i need to set some environment variables ??
