I have encountered a similar probem, which was caused by an EOF marker somehow getting placed into the middle of a data file. Because I was working in UNIX, I checked the file with od (octal dump) and simply changed the character. You can probably use some sort of hex-editor. I never did find out what caused the EOF character to get into that file, but it hasn't happened since...
