We are on Sun as well, and all I did was leave the default initSID.ora in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs, but with just a single 'ifile=<actual location>' entry in it. Seems to work fine. (Of course you need to copy your hacked initSID.ora to any new version $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directories you create :)
