Here are the typical duties I've had to perform: - Become an expert on all aspects of the database, and keep those skills up to date. You also need expert knowledge of the operating system(s) that the database runs on. - Install new releases and patches to the database software. - Develop a backup/recovery strategy and procedures. Integrate database backups into the overall system backup procedures. (Should consider disaster recovery as well.) - Support all types of database users (e.g. end users, analysts, data modellers, programmers). May also be responsible for training. - Liason with database tech support when you can't fix a problem in-house. - Monitor performance of the system, and do tuning where required (this is one of the hardest tasks...almost a "black art") - Monitor disk space usage, rearrange data and indexes when necessary, and plan for future growth in disk storage needs.
