First I would report the oracle tech support persion who laughted in your ear to your sales rep to get their knuckles rapped. It is they're job is to answer your questions no matter how simple they may seem (and db pipes are not always simple).

I recommend reading the section A-20 in the ORACLE7 Server Application Developers Guide for documentation on database pipes. If you don't have the guide, go to your $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin directory and print out the file dbmspipe.sql and read that. It is pretty much the same as the book.
