The default for Oracle V7.1.3 is to use the async I/O facility in HP-UX *if* it is enabled in the HP-UX kernel, *and* if the I/O is directed at a raw disk partition. In later releases of Oracle, this becomes a configurable parameter vs. the current "default attempt to use" approach.
The net message: in 7.1.3 if you target a raw partition *and* async I/O is present in the kernel, it will be used.
Oracle also supports an "emulation" of async I/O support vis a vis use of multiple db writers, if your O/S lacks it (or its disabled in the kernel). The configurable parameter db_writers enables or disables the Oracle emulation of async I/O.
