Explain SQL - RDBMS Tuning

I am researching on a facility called 'Explain Plan', a database tuning tool 
available within Oracle. I am look for opinion on its usefulness as a Database 
Tuning Tool. Also I am looking for opionions from any database administartors of 
their perception of it.



Areas of interest :-


    
  
  •   Is Explain Plan statement easy to use ?
  
  •   What changes could be made to it to make it enhance database 
	performance ?
  
  •   What changes have been made from Ver 6.0 and Ver 7.0 of Oracle ?
  
  •   Does anybody feel that the Explain Plan statement should not be 
	considered as a   database tool ?
  
  •   Have you experienced any flaws with the tool.






I would appreciate if you send me any other relavant information, which agrees or 
disagress with the Explain Plan statement being a useful Database Tuning Tool.
