VARCHAR2 --> LONG

Help. I am having a tough time with the following requirements:

I need to concatenate a number of VARCHAR2 fields on to the end of a LONG data structure. Now this seems simple enough but I get the incompatible data types error.

I realize that there are some very distinct difference between LONG and VARCHAR2 data structures but I was wondering if there is any way of forcing Oracle to overlook the data type differences (ie make the LONG data type act as a VARCHAR2 for concatenation purposes only)

Thanks in advance!

BTW please E-mail response as I do not have a news feed at work currently.
