Vax to AS/400 character translation

Hi,

Does anybody have any experience of copying tables from a VAX server to an AS/400 over the transparent gateway software and getting country specific characters (such as 'umlauts' ä here in Germany) to show up on the remote machine. Currently I can't manage to get either side to recognise the umlauts.
