MAGNA X SELECTED BY OPEN ENVIRONMENT CORPORATION AS KEY DEVELOPMENT ELEMENT OF ENTERA New York, NY, April 3, 1995 Open Environment Corporation has licensed MAGNA X, from Magna Software Corporation, to provide application generation facilities in Open Environments new Entera* Enterprise Operating Environment, which was announced today. By automating the development and generation of server-based application logic, MAGNA X extends Entera as a client/server development solution to meet the needs of the largest group of developers in the market P mainframe COBOL developers.

After extensive evaluation, MAGNA X proved to be the best fit for the Entera marketplace because its 4GL technology greatly simplifies the generation of COBOL-oriented three-tiered distributed applications, explains Rod Hodgman, Vice President of product marketing. It is the only development tool to target the enormous mainframe, COBOL MIS development community. This is the largest, most experienced percentage of the development community and MAGNA X provides them with a powerful tool for developing business-critical client/server applications.

Complete framework for three-tiered client/server deployment. Entera is the first Enterprise Operating Environment, combining application development tools, middleware and systems management tools into a single framework based on the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) standard.

According to Kent Lawson, president of Magna, Entera is a ground-breaking product because it is the only one to address the three essential elements of large-scale client/server systems: 1) application generation facilities for the generation phase; 2) middleware for the deployment phase; and 3) systems management facilities for controlling systems in production. In addition, Entera shares MAGNA Xs goal of integrating legacy systems and new client/server development into an open, flexible computing environment. We see Open Environments selection of MAGNA X as a solid endorsement of our approach and we look forward to helping Open Environment make Entera a success.

MAGNA X for business-critical client/server MAGNA X is the only client/server application development tool that allows MIS programmers to immediately leverage their existing mainframe COBOL skills. It also allows developers to take advantage of their substantial investment in first generation client/server tools such as PowerBuilder, Visual Basic and SQL Windows. Further, MAGNA X offers the critical ability to not only generate UNIX-based three-tiered applications, but to also generate server-based programs for IBM mainframes, effectively allowing the mainframe to become a database server in an open client/server environment.

Magna Software Corporation, of New York City, has 14 years experience as a supplier of application development tools to MIS developers. Magna has an additional office in Washington D.C. and a European affiliate company in Paris. MAGNA X is the third major application development product produced by Magna Software. Its first product was a fourth generation language for Control Data mainframes that dominated its market in the early 1980s. The second product was an application generator for the Groupe Bull mainframe series that has been licensed by 45% of Groupe Bull mainframe sites in the U.S. and 25% of the Groupe Bull sites worldwide.
