On SVR4, volcopy does exist, and it works MUCH faster than dd. You could also use cpio to copy the partition, I believe.

On a NCR 3555 running SVR4, we backup approximately 20 250 meg raw partitions using 2 8mm tape drives in approximately 3 hours.

You Sun/Solaris, HP, and AIX folks out there; do your OSs have something like volcopy?
