Without knowing how many redo log files you currently have I'd say that you need to add more log files. Secondarily, I'd look at the size of your redo log files (512K, 1M, 5M?). Changing the checkpoint interval does not determine how often the redo logs are archived, but how often the DBWR process is woken up to right stuff out to the database.
