Just wanted to put my two cents in here....
We have a really slick (or so we think) script that does our online backups for us. We use a dedicated 2Gb filesystem where we send the online backups to, and then use Software Moguls SM-arch to get it on tape.
This script also does a weekly shutdown and backup of the same database to the same place.
We have done numerous restores and have had no problem.... Remember, My views do not reflect my company's , etc. Your mileage may vary, etc.
