Oracle Rdb (formerly DEC Rdb) supported 2K columns in V3 if I recollect and InterBase allows 20,000 per table (row size max of 32 excluding blob fields).

We have written systems taken to BCNF and still had to have 150+ attributes. One in particular was for the Curator systems for the Canadian Museums of Nature where they collect large amount of attribute data for specimens in their collections.

Both SQL Server and Oracle seem to have this 255/254 limit.
