Robert,

I agree with the other reply you received to some extent. The problem is that you are trying to change a primary key, which violates relational theory, whence the problem. What you may want to do is create a new field (call it ID) that is really your primary key and the value never changes. Then you could still maintain the pk-fk constraints on this new field, while allowing you to modify the "descriptive" fileds you are currently using as described in the other reply you received.
