SQL*NET for clients>: 1.x vs 2.x

We have SQL*NET 1.x running on our clients against several Oracle 6.x databases, and are comfortable with our ability to configure it.
We are bringing in Oracle 7.x for an application, and Ive heard a number of horror stories about SQL*NET 2.x.
- Is 2.x required?
- Is it more difficult to configure than 1.x?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
