Can you tell us a little bit about the characteristics of the problem, e.g.:

  • how many objects are being stored?
  • do you have line segments, points, rectangles, arbitrarily shaped objects, ...
  • are you dealing with 2-d, 3-d, k-d data?
  • are you dealing with conventional distance metrics (e.g. Euclidean norms, max coordinate distance, etc.)
  • do your objects have a predominant orientation?
  • is this a multi-user system, so that full transactional integrity must be maintained on each object and each part of each object?
  • etc.
