Oracle SGA max size

Hi all,
Has anyone tried to get the SGA size > 1GB.
I'm working with a Sun SC2000 with 5GB of memory but the DBA has been unable to get the SGA > 1GB.
The shared memory segment size is set to 2GB and I have been able to successfully get a segment size that big, as both myself and the Oracle user. When Oracle is started up and we set the parameters in ora.ini to demand more that 1GB it croaks, when we back it back down to < 1GB, everything works fine.
Any ideas ?
