I am totally unfamiliar with SQL*NET except that it is needed to do client/server stuff. Currently we are thinking of using our PC workstations to run some GUI report writers against our Oracle7 database which lives on a SPARCserver 1000. Clients and server are all connected by a ethernet network. Currently the PCs are connected to the Novell server for office automation stuff and are also running NCSA telnet on top of packet drivers (actually the ODIPKT shim - if it means anything to you) to access our Oracle Financials v9 applications.

Our management would like nice laser printed reports with fancy fonts and graphic lines rather than the standard Financials reports off the line printer. Since we have Borland ReportSmith (a freebie that came with our dBase V purchases) I naturally thought of using this.

However I am a bit unclear on how to connect up the various bits, so:

  1. I will need SQL*NET 2 running on the unix server, right?
  2. Since it's unix, I will have to be running TCPIP, or can I run over IPX?
  3. On the Windows client side I would need?: [a] a TCPIP stack, but which does SQL*NET work well with? (Netmanage, Novell LWP). Or does it work with any winsock? [b] a SQL*NET 2 client, of course? [c] some sort of ODBC driver? [d] Borland ReportSmith, R&R ReportWriter, CrystalReports or similar?
  4. Can all this stuff work with Windows running in Standard Mode rather than in 386 enhanced mode?
  5. How much memory do I realisticly need? (the more the better, I know)

Thanks for listening!

Philip
