You have a gig of redologs broken up how? 2 at 500MB each or 1000 at 1M each. I would recommend many smaller logfiles over fewer large ones. (Though 1000 may be slightly excessive :)
If you feel that you have enough logfiles and they aren't too large look for I/O contention on your redo or archivelog drives.
