Our database is crashing due to the LGWR process termination. The only error message available (ORA-7497) says that the LGWR process cannot create the trace file. All other proecesses are writing trace information to the directory specified in init.ora parameter BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST, so permissions are correct. The LGWR process has not written to a trace file since this problem began. A log switch will inevitably cause a crash.

Typical error in alert log or trace file :

ORA-00603: ORACLE server session terminated by fatal error
ORA-00449: background process 'LGWR' unexpectedly terminated with error 7497
ORA-07497: sdpri: cannot create trace file ''; errno = .
ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced
