Hello all;

We're looking for ways to provide users with a query instance, which, if possible, shares data with our production instance, only in read-only mode. With version 7.1 it's possible to alter a tablespace to be read-only, but is it possible to share the data files between two instances? One with it in read-write mode and the other read-only? We've been doing it this way for years on our MVS platform, and we're looking for reasonable ways to provide the same functionality with Oracle running on DEC OSF/1.

It looks like we could probably do it with data base links if we had Trusted Oracle (we do not), as the SQL reference states that you can mount remote databases as readonly *if* you have Trusted Oracle.

I'll welcome any and all suggestions, discussion etc regarding this topic, what our possible options are, what other sites are doing etc.

Thanks in advance
