R your HP server running 24 hours or on a scheduled shutdown ? Normally, u can trigger an auto-shutdown of ORACLE after work hours where u r pretty sure there ain't anybody logging on. This would have to work hand-in-hand with your HP downtime. ORACLE has auto startup/ shutdown scripts that can incorporate into your HP's init dir. This way, u need not even worry about messaging.

I don't think SQL*NET can do messaging. Presumably if u r running TCP/IP as the network protocol, u can probly use wall command from unix to notify all logged-in users running VT220 mode.

Cheers.
