It is worthwhile to pick up the book "Oracle DBA Handbook" by Kevin Loney - Oracle Press. A very good manual with many scripts and sql code to perform tuning and maintenance tasks. A detailed discussion on hot backups and the needed script skeleton provided in refernce.
