what's a floating exception?

I'm running a commercial application based on Oracle and SQL Menu 5.0 Afterchoosing a particular menu choice I immediately get kicked out of the application and the terminal is hung until I kill the PID. This is Oracle 6 running under SCO Unix. The following error message is written just before the hagup: runmenu50: Floating exception - Core dumped
Any ideas what all this means and how to fix it?
