Hi. I'm a consultant at Hemmings Motor News. We are preparing a request for proposals for a new database system. It's going to be ready in about a week. If you're interested in submitting a proposal please write me (via email or at the address below) and I will send you a copy of the RFP when it's ready. Apologies in advance for cross-posting this in a few places, sorry to those who think this notice is a bit too commercial.

Here's a little more detail:

Hemmings Motor News, located in Bennington, Vermont, is known as the "bible" of the old car hobby. It's a monthly magazine with a readership of 294,574. Each issue contains several hundred pages of classified and display advertising for collector cars and parts, restoration services and tools, literature and events.

Hemmings Motor News will be soliciting proposals for a DBMS to replace the aging and inadequate flat-file system currently used to enter and process advertisements. The company plans to integrate this system with a future database that includes all of its customers. We would like the production system to run on our current hardware (a network of Macintoshes with a Quadra 950 containing a gigabyte drive and 80 MB or RAM). We will consider other server platforms (Netware, maybe even *NIX) that support our current (Macintosh) clients, though.

Currently, advertising production is Macintosh-based for both server and clients. Subscriber information is stored on an HP300 mini, and information about other types of customers are stored a variety of microcomputer databases. No decision has been made regarding the platform -- hardware, software or operating system for the planned integrated customer database. Your proposed production system should be capable of working with Oracle, Sybase, SQL Server or something else runing on UNIX, NT, NetWare or something else :-)

If this sounds like your cup of tea, please send me email with a subject line of SEND RFP:

  • Please include your US Mail address**. Sorry, we can't send you the RFP via email.

If I get a lot of email requests, I may not be able to answer questions or even respond with anything but a form letter, so I apologize in advance, but we will be able to answer your questions after you've seen the RFP and expressed interest. We'll also be planning site visits for developers who are interested. Received on Fri Sep 30 1994 - 12:05:30 CET
