DEC has software called the Reliable Transaction Router that will allow multiple backends to process transactions, with one machine acting as the primary and the other as standby.
As far as Oracle products go, Parallel Server is one option you've looked at. Hot-Site backup is not really a replication service. For hot-site backup, you are better off shipping the log files to be applied to the backup machine, for performance reasons, etc.
