Huh? Then you are stuck without recent data! You want to rebuild the database with the on-line backup, and then apply the logs until you are recovered up to the last log.

The main reason for doing EXPs is if you have to import into a different structure/disk layout, because it is a logical backup you can place tables in different places. Also, it takes less space then a raw backup.

On the other hand, it may take an IMP 2-3 days to build a database that a hot backup will have back in a couple of hours!

You haven't said how much data you have, and how large your backup tapes are. If you can do a hot backup several times a day, DOIT! If not, do it when you can. The reason for wanting recent full hot backups is that it's quicker to restore since you have less logs to roll, and easier to manage since you don't have to keep track of 10 different tapes with the logs on them.
