v$version equiv in Oracle 6?

Is there an equivalent view to v$version in Oracle 6 that one can use to programmatically obtain the version number of Oracle that one is connecting to? If there is, is it also available in V7 of Oracle? This needs to be something that a non-sys user can get access to or at least be granted access to.
