Unexpected oracle server termination

The following error message was emitted from my program - which is an ORACLE client (running on SUN, release 7.0.12.1.0):
Unexpected oracle server termination by signal 6
My guess is that the "shadow" process terminated (why?) and somewhere deep down in the ORACLE library code the above message is displayed and the process exits. No errors are propagated back to my embedded-SQL code in the form of an ORA* error (a most undesirable behavior).
What is the cause of this error?
