I seem to remember receiving a love note from Oracle stating that some earlier versions of Oracle 7 for AIX had a nasty problem with raw partitions. It seems that Oracle was overwriting part of the AIX Logical Volume header information in the partition, which could cause problems with data corruption or other such horrors. You might want to check with Oracle to see if your version of Oracle7 is one which has a problem with raw partitions.
