Oracle security: SQL*Net V2 password

Believe it or not, Oracle suggests putting a cleartext password in a shellscript. Page 7-5 of the SQL*Net Administrator's Guide, Version 2.0. Oracle should be flamed for suggesting such a thing in documentation; naive administrators will just follow blindly.

The proposed shellscript is for shutting down the listener process by way of the lsnrctl program. Has anyone come up with a way to do this automatically at system shutdown time without putting a cleartext password in a shellscript? I am running under SunOS 5.3 (Solaris 2.3).
