Depends what sort of disk subsystem you use and how you drive it. Take as a completely unbiased example ;-) the Sun SPARCstorage Array. This can be configured as a RAID 5 device and is capable of very high I/O rates. For example it is capable of 1680 raw random reads per second in a 30 disk configuration. This is equivalent to 3.28MB/sec. You can configure multiple arrays and then all you need is enough CPU power and UNIX processes to drive it.
