The easiest way that I found when using tar is to use the verbose (v) option and re-direct the output to a system file so that you can read it later (especially if you have a script backing up a large number of data files). Example:
tar -cvf /dev/rmt0 /user/data1.dbf /user/data2/dbf > /user/tar.log
