What may be of use to you is a functional addition to Oracle in 7.1.3 - read only tablespaces. The idea behind read only tablespaces is to do exactly what you mentioned above. You mark the tablespace concerned with the
ALTER TABLESPACE USER_TBS READ ONLY; Then copy the datafile to the CD medium (by whatever means) alter the controlfile so that it points to the new location and thats it.
