Navigation in pre-insert trigger

Greetings all. In Oracle Forms 4, I use a pre-insert trigger to check that everything's ready for the insert. If I find something missing, I'd like to navigate to that item; but preinsert  doesn't allow go_item (a restricted built-in). Right now I just give an "informative message", but is there an alternative.
