Raw partitions will improve the speed of DISK ACCESSES. Before going to raw partitions (and the associated headaches they can cause), consider the following...

  1. Are your performance problems being caused by physical io? If not, going raw won't buy you much.
  2. Are there things you can do first to reduce physical io (ie. eliminate fragmentation, optimize SQL) that will make performance acceptable?

But if you really are gonna be doing a lot of disk accessing, raw partitions can help significantly.
